Northampton Township Parks and Recreation Responds to COVID-19 Crisis with Free Virtual Classes and Weekly Family Activities

The mission of Northampton Township Parks and Recreation has always been to provide quality programming to their residents. As with many other agencies across the nation, the Parks and Recreation Department was challenged with exactly how to accomplish that mission when the Coronavirus impacted the community. What would be our answer to the crisis? How can we continue to be of service to our community during this difficult time?
With the help of several of instructors, many of whom are donating their services, the Parks and Recreation Team has found a way to connect the participants and provide free, beneficial programs virtually. This past week, the Parks and Recreation team launched several exercise programs for adults and a few for the children too!
Barre classes, Yoga classes, Zumba, and other Dance Fitness classes can all be accessed via Zoom or Facebook Live, with more classes to come. A weekly schedule will be posted on the Parks and Recreation home page at www.northamptonrec.com. Some classes that were already in progress when the virus hit, such as SAT Prep, Driver’s Ed and Super Soccer Stars, are able to continue via a virtual platform.
In addition, Parks and Recreation has a weekly schedule of activities for families that will be updated to the P&R website and facebook each week with new content:
Mondays - Virtual Tour (zoos, museums etc)
Tuesday - Craft of the Day
Wednesday - Free Coloring Pages (adult and kids)
Thursday - Scavenger Hunt (inside or outside depending on the weather)
Friday - Family Photo Theme Day
The efforts by the Parks and Recreation Department have not gone unnoticed by those participating. Some of the few comments received include:
“Thank you for sharing these! Will upgrade be offered again, my 9-year-old is devastated we forgot this morning!”
“This was awesome—thank you so much! MANY thanks to the Recreation Department and the instructor for making this available! So appreciated!”
“Thank you for this!”
In a time when social distancing is the new norm, the Parks and Recreation Department has found a way to keep the community engaged, maintain our health, and most of all, connect to each other.
